Daniels 1 H. Daniels Denvir Bell 1B King Leopold’s Ghost : Henry Morton Stanley Henry Morton Stanley was a flawed and cruel man. He harmed innocent people during his time in the Belgian Congo, and appeared to show absolutely no remorse for his actions. He helped to usher in a whole era of racism, cruelty, and injustice into the Congo through his explorations he made there. What he has done has changed many lives and affects others even today. First of all, let’s have a look at what exactly the Belgian Congo was and who was involved in it. According to Adam Hochschild, in his book about the colonization of the Congo called King Leopold’s Ghost: A Story of Greed, Terror, and Heroism in Colonial Africa , “…what [Joseph Conrad] would call “the vilest scramble for loot that ever disfigured the history of human conscience” (Hochschild 4). Because the colonization of the Congo by the Belgians occurred for the sole purpose of power and economic wealth, it quickly became a horrible and cruel existence (Roes).
