A strong athlete just finished a 1-mile run and sat down to have a drink with her friends. During the run, her blood pressure was not dramatically elevated but her cardiac output was greatly increased. After the run, her cardiac output decreased dramatically, but her blood pressure only decreased to its resting level. Explain how sympathetic stimulation of her large veins, arteries in her digestive system, and arteries in her skeletal muscles change while she is relaxing. Explain why this is consistent with the decrease in her cardiac output (include in your answer the skeletal muscle pump). 2. Predict the effect of each of the following conditions on blood flow: 1) vasoconstriction of blood vessels in the skin in response to cold exposure, 2) vasodilation of the blood vessels in the skin in response to an elevated body temperature, and 3) erythrocytosis, which results in a greatly increased hematocrit. Explain. 3.
