Foreign Conflicts
The U.S. faced many foreign challenges immediately after they won the revolutionary
war. George Washington faced the British capturing U.S. shipping companies' ships and selling
weapons to Amerindians. John Adams also faced many challenges during his presidency. The
major challenge he faced was when the French started capturing American ships carrying British
goods. Each president made the best decision in the situation the country was going through.
Britain continued harassing American frontier settlers and U.S. ships on the oceans. The
British remained in their northern frontier posts on U.S. soil and thus violated the peace treaty of
1783. They sold firearms and alcohol to Amerindians, who attacked American settlers. The
British navy seized about 300 U.S. ships in the West Indies starting in 1793. Hundreds of
Americans were forced into service on British vessels; hundreds of others were imprisoned.
