Bios 334 Evolution 2007 Name_______________________________ Homework 3. Due 10:00 AM Monday Nov 5. Full 20 pts for reasonable on-time effort. You maye work together (and you may use books and notes), but remember the goal is to be able to figure out these kinds of problems on your own. 1. A natural population of adult mice has the following genotype frequencies at a possible disease locus: freq( BB ) = 0.9000 freq( Bb ) = 0.1000 freq( bb ) = 0.0000 This provides two pieces of evidence consistent with the b allele being disadvantageous. Explain (Hint: calculate the allele frequencies and the Hardy Weinberg frequencies). 2. You have discovered a gene affecting beak size in a Galapagos finch. The A allele tends to produce larger beaks than the a allele, and these leads to the following numbers of offspring for each genotype: R AA = 4.00 R Aa = 3.60 R aa = 3.60 (a) What are the relative fitnesses of the three genotypes? (b) What is the selection coefficient, s? (c) What kind of allele is a (dominant recessive, intermediate)?

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
