Courtney Mulroy 22088043 Soc 212 HW #2 September 21, 2007 SOC 212 HOMEWORK 2 I. 3-6, pp. 51-53. Use complete sentences. a) The small cars get the best miles per gallon overall. The dot plot from the small cars is skewed to the left and has a large spread on the axis. The median of the small cars is 33 MPG. The majority of the small cars get more than 30 MPG. On the contrary, the family cars have the majority of the data in the middle of the dot plot axis and a median of 29 MPG. None of the family cars get more than 31 MPG. The worst cars for miles per gallon are the large cars. Most of the large car data is shifted to the left side of the dot plot and they only have a median of 27 MPG. b) The sports cars have the largest spread and highest variability. Not only does it have the largest range, but it also has an extreme outlier at 38 MPG when the rest of the plots are between 23 and 32. The small car dot plot data sits more on the right side of the axis than either of the other cars. It has some variability its data and a medium sized spread. The upscale car plots are skewed to the left. The spread is very small, and there is little variability in its data.
