ESSAY FACTS 1.Differentiate between collective security and peace-keeping. Discuss the trends in their evolution since the creation of the United Nations and provide examples. Peacekeeping: as defined by the United Nations , is a way to help countries torn by conflict create conditions for sustainable peace. Peacekeepers monitor and observe peace processes in post-conflict areas and assist ex-combatants in implementing the peace agreements they may have signed. Accordingly UN peacekeepers can include soldiers, civilian police officers, and other civilian personnel. Peacekeepers remain members of their respective armed forces, and do not constitute an independent "UN army," as the UN does not have such a force. Collective Security is a system aspiring to the maintenance of peace , in which participants agree that any "breach of the peace is to be declared to be of concern to all the participating states," 1 and will result in a collective response.
