final exam: 2-4 pm may 8th 5 ids (3 mins each): lesser-known artists just as important as mainstream (only 2 nd half of class) 1 st half: ID (artist, approx. date, title) 2 nd half: how the work is significant; where it fits 3 comparisons (10 mins each): most will be from 2 nd half of the class, but there may be one or two comparing one from latter half of class with one from former (all comparisons will have AT LEAST one image from the 2 nd half; up to two images from the first half will be included for comparison, but they will be kind of obvious works) 1 st half: ID (same as above) 2 nd half: comparing the most striking characteristics common to both works (similar subject matter, scale, same movement, etc), as well as the most striking differences IN LIGHT of the similarities two 30-min essays with more choices MOVEMENTS Pop Art - pop art movement: more monumental, less edgy, less involved with darker side of life, and endlessly popular - Richard Hamilton: british looking at American culture and the “runoff” of American consumerism, the items and ideas that are produced but aren’t really thought about, that can be seen with a different perspective outside of America o takes it out of context (similar to Beatles taking American music into the british context) - Hamilton’s definition of “pop art”: popular culture had its own art, just as good as high art, it was valuable just how it is (this mindset used to knock the superiority complex of museum art) o this use of the word “pop art” has since disappeared; it now means taking consumer imagery and raising it to level of “high art”, “museum art” irony: once the “pop art” consumer imagery attained this level of prestige, it was more widely embraced than the very high modernist art it was struggling to emulate Minimalism - Morris, andre, Marden, lewitt - minimalists run a tight dialog w each other, has to do with the removal of the artist’s personality and expression from the work, and a principle based on repetition - minimalists known as always going to pick something up in a truck; knew their way around a construction yard; etc etc

Arte Povera - Italian movement: “poor art” – characterized by lack of pretension, closeness to natural experience - art critics of the period always compete with each other to “give it a name”, to categorize and name budding movements in art - major dealer of Arte Povera: chellant, coined the term - counterculture theater: turning theater back to its roots in ritual, make it a bonding experience btwn actors and audience - had a problem with bourgeouis decorum, high class lifestyle - with broad counterculture movement exploding, all the sudden, alternative artists have a huge audience Conceptual Art - similar recognition process as pop art: it did not start with the first concept artists deeming themselves concepts artists; as the movement developed, it became recognized as a unifying - the concept is more important than its realization; sometimes its realization is not
