Anton Pavlovich Chekhovwas a Russian playwrightand short story writer who isconsidered to be among the greatest writers of short fiction in history. He was born on 29 January1860 in Taganrog and was the third of six surviving children. His father, Pavel Chekhov, the sonof a former serf, ran a grocery store. He was devout Orthodox Christian. Chekhov's mother,Yevgeniya Morozova, was an excellent storyteller who entertained the children with tales of hertravels with her cloth-merchant father all over Russia. Later Chekhov remembered "Our talentswe got from our father, but our soul from our mother."Chekhov attended the Greek School and Gymnasium, where he was kept down for a yearfor failing an examination in Ancient Greek. He sang at the Greek Orthodoxmonastery. Later,describing his childhood, he used the word "suffering", because he was not into religion at all.He finally became an atheist.In 1876, Chekhov's father was declared bankrupt. To avoid debtor's prisonhe went toMoscow. Chekhov was left in Taganrog to sell the family's possessions and finish his education.He remained in Taganrog for three more years, boarding with a man called Selivanov who, likeLopakhin in The Cherry Orchard, had bailed out the family for the price of their house.In 1879 Chekhov finished gymnasium and joined his family in Moscow.
