BIODIVERSITY AND SPECIES 0. Biodiversity Types: 0. Genetic Diversity - Measures variety of different versions of same genes. 1. Species Diversity - Measures number of different kinds of organisms within a community. 2. Ecological Diversity - Measures richness and complexity of a community. What Are Species 1. Species - Organisms of the same kind that are able to breed in nature and produce fertile offspring. 3. Underlying idea is that reproductive isolation prevents gene exchange and gives rise to new species. 0. Hybridization creates a dilemma. 0. Species identification often based on morphological characteristics. 0. DNA sequencing How Many Species Are There ? 2. Currently 1.7 million species identified. 3. Estimates range between 3-50 million. 4. May be 30 million insect species. 5. Invertebrates make up 70% of all known species, and probably most of yet to be discovered species. How Many Species Are There ? 4. Tropical rainforests and coral reefs are biodiversity hotspots. 6. Based on plants and terrestrial vertebrates 7. 1.4% of Earth’s land area, but 44% of all known higher plants and 35% of terrestrial vertebrates 8. NA and Europe only contain 10-15%.
