News Report Assignment
Your assignment is to become a news reporter and write a news article about the death
of the old man in “The Tell-Tale Heart.”
When writing your news report, you must consider and include the following:
 Choose a specific event you want to focus on – only include necessary information!
 Before you write you may complete a 5Ws (Who, What, Where, When, Why and
How) graphic organizer, if it helps you. You must be sure to include actual facts
(quotes) from the short story, but you may also take appropriate liberties where
needed to report your story . For example , you can add details that you may not
see in the story to help develop your news story.
 You must include at least three quotations from “participants” and “bystanders” in
your article . (You may make-up the quotations)
 In your good copy, you must also include a picture with a caption that expands the
understanding of your news report (be sure to use an image that relates to the
subject matter in your article!)
 You must follow the inverted pyramid structure that was discussed in class ( see
back )
 Divide your news report into appropriately short organized paragraphs to help your
article flow.
 Use correct spelling, grammar and punctuation so that your news report is clear
and easy to read.
 Proofread your article.
Once you have completed your rough draft, use the below checklist to ensure you
have included all components to be successful!
