Lateralization
Know specializations
of the left and right hemispheres such as language, faces,
parts, math, positive emotions, etc., etc.; which visual field sends information to
each hemisphere and which side of the body each hemisphere controls.
A.
Two Hemispheres
-each contain frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes
a.
Lateralization
—specialization of each hemisphere create asymmetry
i.
Divergence of function control
b.
Normally connected
i.
Via the Corpus Callosum
—allows communication b/w the two hemispheres
1.
Video: individual who had corpus callosum cut
a.
Done to control epileptic seizures
b.
Prevented right/left sides from communicating w/ each other
c.
Normally, getting both your hands to work independently is
impossible, because your sides are connected
i.
BUT When Joe was given the same task, his hands
operated independently!
d.
Researchers also wondered if he would see faces embedded in
drawings of fruit—
i.
First painting goes to right hemisphere, Joe says FACE
1.
He sees the entire picture and that it makes a
face
2.
(if it’s in the left visual field, it gets processed
by the left brain)
ii.
Next painting goes to left hemisphere, Joe says FRUIT
1.
Because he focuses on the elements that make
up the face
2.
(if it’s in the right visual field, it gets processed
