ABSTRACT: The measurement of the compressive strength of concrete is a very common and useful practice in the construction industry. The science behind concrete mix designs and the practical application of these mix designs is heavily researched. The compressive strength test for concrete is the best measurement of concrete’s ability to withstand the desired applied loads. Due to the prevalence of concrete in modern construction a thorough understanding of the mix design process, concrete production, and compressive strength tests is a critical facet of any Engineering program of study. This lab is designed to demonstrate the characteristics of specific mix designs, and their effect on the ultimate compressive yield stress on a concrete sample. Students will batch a small sample of concrete, using a calculated mix design based on the parameters provided. The concrete will be poured into test cylinders, and allowed to cure for 28 days in a controlled environment. After properly cured the cylinders will be subjected to axial loading using a compressive strength testing apparatus until they fracture. An analysis of the strength test data will then be conducted to determine key properties of the concrete, as well as their relationship to the original mix design.
