WE ARE NOW A DAY BEHIND THE SYLLABUS 1. Protestant churches w/ more liberal outlook are seeing declines across board (-5% to -10%) a. Protestant churches w/ conservative, literal outlook making large gains (40%-225%) b. Population growth happening most in west and south c. Trends 1990-2000 2. What is happening in the individual? a. What is happening around them? b. Religion is a social phenomenon and therefore individuals become religious by a process of socialization c. Groups desire for new members i. These effect how religious a person will become 1) Family/friend influences 2) Formal methods: some form of education system (Bar Mitveh prep class, Sunday School), church services 3) Family interactions a) Casual interaction w/ peers, conversations, informal gatherings b) Because the best teaching comes from imitation; children mimic the behaviors of adults c) We learn appropriate behaviors through fellowship. d) Marriage (informal and formal components) - endogamy is encouraged e) Idea is that both partners will support each other
