The Importance of symbols in religion A symbol = any object that can be used as a vehice for conception which is "meaning" Think about a cross or flag Must be public in nature Key for interpretation s Religious expression relies on the ability of individuals to use symbols to orient their world s We are in the first place looking for order s We are dependent on symbol systems to make sense of the world s Highlights the importance of language Clifford Geertz George Homans: Shift away from seeing religion as derived from something else See religion as a real part of human behavioral dispositions Humans calculate the cost benefits of a situation and makes choices that they believe will maximize returns (have agency) s Based on economic model, where emotional acting can be seen as rational s Individuals learn to calculate costs and benefits of actions, what is in self interest, and what is not. s
