Tim Matthews February 8, 2007 English 131 Weekly Reflection #1 When referring to a utopian society it is often believed that it would be bereft of drugs, alcohol, and sex. But that’s only one person’s utopian idea, for some people the so called, “forbidden pleasures” are often the most desirable. When reading the story it did seem, in the beginning, that the Omela’s were a “goody-goody…[s]miles, bells, parades, horses, bleh” type of primp and proper society (250). However, Le Guin shoots us back to our current reality, by adding in an orgy to spice things up. She later also talks about the Omela’s using drugs and their own concoction called drooz. In today’s society the root to many of our social problems seem to involve drugs, alcohol, and sex. But somehow the Omela’s have found a way to not only use or engage in these things, but do so responsibly so that no bad comes out of it. Violence is usually the immediate reaction after problems like these, but the Omela’s say that “[t]he joy built
