1Kaitlyn SimmsProfessor LeosonENGL 162March 24, 2022Essay 2: “Is assigning homework to children beneficial or detrimental?”Over the years, homework has caused a huge uproar. Educational staff members believethat homework is an essential part of a child’s education and development. While many believethat students spend enough time at school during the day so they should not be sent home withmore schoolwork on top of it. However, nobody sits down and thinks “what could the possiblebenefits be to having homework?” Homework has way more benefits than one would think.Children who are sent home with homework during the week and on weekends can have manybenefits; it will teach responsibility, teaches children how to be independent, and gives parents aninsight on what is going on at school.Homework is a huge factor when it comes to teaching children how to be responsible. When homework is assigned, it is a child’s responsibility to make sure it gets finished on time.Once a child leaves the classroom, the teacher is no longer responsible for making sure Joe andSally stay on task and get their schoolwork done. At home, children have to be self-disciplinedenough in order to choose completing their homework over going and hanging out with theirfriends as soon as they get home. Responsibility is what builds a person’s strength of character.Nobody will make it far in life if they are not responsible. Duke University created a study toshow all of the positive life skills that come from doing homework. “The Duke study mentionedearlier also found that students build important skills like conscientiousness, time management, organization, and prioritization by doing their homework.” (Virginia, et al, 2021)Conscientiousness, time management, organization, and prioritization all piggyback off of

The Duke University study gives out proof of logos, they are using the statisticsgathered from their study to back up their reasonings logically. This study goes to show thatgiving homework to children all throughout their years at school will teach a great amount ofresponsibility. Studies have also proven that people who are responsible will live a life of lessguilt and regret.Teachers who hand out homework to their students are not doing it out of spite, they arehanding out homework in hopes are it will teach their students to be independent. Now-a-days, agreat amount of educators live by the “10-minute rule” this helps guide teachers to assign just theright amount of homework to students each night according to their grade. “It goes like this: in 1stgrade, kids should have 10 minutes of homework, 20 minutes in 2ndgrade, and so on until about2 hours of homework in 12thgrade.” (Virginia, Et. Al, 2021) Each year students are assignedmore and more homework, this is teaching the students how to be more independent as the yearsgo on. Teachers slowly increasing the amount of homework can help students tremendously. Ifone you an educator randomly assigns twelve homework assignments instead of the usual two orthree assignments, students will become more dependent and ask for answers from friends.
