Dr. Emmert POSC 1023 16 November 2006 Problem Set 3B 1. Summer ventilation is mainly used to remove heat and moisture from the house, and often a negative pressure tunnel system is used. Fans are used to pull air through the house and cool the birds, while also using evaporative cooling pads. Winter ventilation can be a little more complicated because of the removal of moisture and ammonia removal. A negative pressure system is used to remove moisture without chilling the birds too much. The cool air mixes with the warm air before coming in contact with the birds. 2. Negative pressure systems are usually preferred to positive pressure systems because of the uniformity of air flow. The advantages of a negative pressure system include allowing the air to stay very close to the ceiling as it moves down the center aisle and warming the air before it comes in contact with the birds.
