Poultry production became concentrated in the south because of the warm climate, rail and barge transportation, relatively low cost, and the available land and workers. One disadvantage to raising turkeys in the Southern U.S. is that they cannot handle the heat as well as the broilers can. 2. A. In the 1920’s-1930’s the poultry industry moved away from the dual-purpose bird and introduced the “New York dressed” bird. B. In the 1940’s the industry began to grow under the demand for more white meat and started the system for vertical integration. C. In the 1950’s the chicken of tomorrow contest was held and was the catalyst for developing the principles of genetics and nutrition in years to come. D. In the 1960’s and 1970’s vertical integration increased even more and the industry began to focus more on marketing the products.
