Dr. Emmert Intro to Poultry Science 4 September 2006 2363 Section Two Problem Set 1. Over the last 60 years changes in the market have led to further processed and value added birds. In addition, the industry has moved away from dual purpose birds and now focuses on separate male and female lines and specific traits such as breast meat. From the genetic standpoint, scientists have concluded that pure lines are not sacred. 2. The two inventions that have allowed for genetic advancements to tale place rapidly and effectively are the incubator and the trap nest. The incubator allows many chicks to be hatched in a controlled atmosphere at one time thereby increasing the chances for genetic improvement. In addition, hatchability has improved along with embryo development. On the other hand, the trap nest has been very useful in identifying the hen so as to keep an accurate pedigree. Having an accurate pedigree allows scientists to track genetic improvements and continue to make genetic improvements. 3.
