The course concepts consider the major knowledge areas required to createsuccessful events: such as administration, design and production, promotion, riskmanagement, and technology. The students are expected to learn the importance ofcareful event research, design, planning, coordination and evaluation in the eventproduction process.The course is designed to provide students with an advanced background inmanagement, marketing, and consumer behavior theories in order to strengthen thestudents’ critical, integrative, and creative thinking skills.In so doing, students shouldcome to generate solutions to address management related problems for eventorganizations. Students will explore event management strategies and identifypotential problems/solutions for a variety of sub industry sectors from both atheoretical and practical standpoint.Extensive examination of theoretical and empirical literature related to currentstrategies and operations in special events and service related literature is required.II.COURSEOBJECTIVES:At the conclusion of this course, the graduate student should beable to:1.Apply strategic and tactical event management processes to event industrypractice1
2.Develop strong theory orientated research knowledge and translate theory topractical event management strategies3.Explain the importance of the event industry to tourism and the economy in general4.Obtain marketing-orientated thinking skills for solutions in event managementregarding effective event experiences5.Critique and analyze research practices applied in the event industry6.Examine what a special event is under the premise and lens of multiplephilosophical assumptions7.Provide insight regarding why people are intrigued and motivated to consumespecial events8.Improve professional discussion and writing skillsIII.COURSE PREREQUISITES:This course does not have any formal prerequisites.However, in order to enroll in this course students must either be a Rosen CollegeGraduate Student or receive course consent from the Graduate Program Director.The professor cannot provide course consent for this class.IV.RECOMMENDED TEXT:The text book is not required for this course. However, it is auseful resource for students and complements the material learned in lectures. Thebook is also helpful for some students in the drafting of their term paper. It issuggested that if the student does not have educational or professional experiencewith event management and the special events industry that they purchase the book.
