FINAL PROJECT: A SONG FOR TIBET
Sam was born in Tibet and his family escaped when he was nine years old.
Sam saw the destruction of his homeland, religion, and everything he knew.
The "trek" to India was hard. He spent a lot of time on his mother’s back and
was very ill during the trip. He described leaving by saying, "The Chinese
surrounded the city. At nightfall 12 families began the two-month trek to
India. Only three made it over the border alive." His family followed the
Dalai Lama to India. He grew up knowing what life was like before in Tibet,
afterward in India, and now while they are still struggling. Sam has an office
in his basement. He notified the Canadian government at least a year in
advance that the Dalia Lama was coming. They basically wanted nothing to
do with him because there would be a "price to pay". It was more important
for them to be Allies with the Chinese than with the Dalai Lama. Only a few
members of parliament met with him and that was in the back of a building
like they were trying to hide the facts it was happening. Sam is trying to get
people to listen to what happened in Tibet and what is still happening. They
are fighting for both religious and political freedom.
Since the movie Sam became president of the CTC and has since retired. In
an article posted online it states that Mr. Samdup served for more than 17
years as the head of the CTC on a volunteer basis. He put in his resignation
So he could spend more time with his family. His career at the CTC took a lot
of time away from his family and now he needs to be with them more.
