Feudalism – political/economic system based on ownership of land by the few Religious reasons – Protestant religious reform Puritans Economic reasons – source of raw materials Political Participation Property qualifications – not imposed immediately Jamestown – let servants vote Religious qualifications – had to be Puritan to vote in Mass. Changed in 1691 – separated church and government Gender – women not totally excluded till the Revolution If they owned land and no males present in household Political Participation African Americans and slavery Prior to the end of 1600’s, Africans were treated same as Europeans That changed after the system of slavery initiated Slavery illegal in Britain; changed legal laws to make it impossible for blacks to own land – stripped away legal rights Split from England French & Indian War – fought on behalf of the colonists Expensive war – forced the French to leave North America and Spain to leave Florida Had been taxing their own citizens – now turned to the colonists to help pay for their defense Sugar Act of 1764; Stamp Act of 1765; Townshend Act of 1767; Tea Act of 1773; Coercive Acts of 1774 Split from England...
