Unformatted text preview: 08/28/08 How to Study Politics For understanding and/or for practice 08/28/08 Four things we may do Describe Explain Predict Recommend 08/28/08 Two Ways of Understanding Politics Our Basic Question: Why things (political developments) happen as they do Two possible foci: EXPLANATION OF HAPPENINGS in terms of causes EXPLANATION OF DECISIONS by people (political actors) in terms of reasons or motivations 08/28/08 How we explain happenings Caused by Structure (e.g., Constitution, laws, governmental organization, etc.) Caused by Processes (e.g., voting in elections, voting in legislatures, negotiation among bureaucracies, etc.) 08/28/08 Ways of understanding a decision/action by a political actor His/her/its motivation(s) Conscious Spoken Secret Non-conscious Current (situation) Past (biography) His/her/its worldview (reality image) in terms of which the decision/action makes sense, given the motivation 08/28/08 So, to summarize: Who or what [the actor] Decides or does what [the action or happening/event] To or With Whom or What [targetindividual, group, institution, location] Using what [instruments] Why?
