Include a) operating principle, b) type of materials appropriate for analysis, and c) ambient conditions required for analysis. a) AFM: allows an extremely fine sharp tip to either come in contact or in very close proximity to the sample that is being imaged STM: conducting tip is brought very near to a metallic or semiconducting surface and a bias between the two can allow electrons to tunnel through the vacuum between them b) AFM: analyzes most surfaces STM: analyzes metal surfaces c) AFM: ambient in air or liquid STM: ultra high vacuum, air, various liquids or gases, temperatures ranging from 0K to a few hundred degrees Celsius 2. Briefly describe one application for each STM and AFM. It is possible to study biological macromolecules and even living organisms using AFM. One application for STM is to find carbon nanotubes. 3. Describe briefly the three components of a smart system/structure.
