3FIRE AS AN ECOLOGICAL FACTORINTRODUCTION:Fire is a natural process, and that it often operates as an integral part of theecosystem in which it occurs butFire as an ecological factor brings sudden changes inthe ecosystem. It destroys the ecosystem life and affect the whole ecosystem likeplants, animals etc.AWildland fireis defined as any fire that is burning in a naturalenvironment. Wildfire is most common in dry and montane forests.Fire ecologyIt is a branch of ecology that focuses on the origins of Wildland fire and itsrelationship to the environment that surrounds it, both living and non-living.Fire historydeals with how often fires have occurred in a given geographicalarea. Trees are our source ofinformation on fires in the distantpast. Trees record their historythrough a system of growth ringsthat develop on the trees eachyear. When a fire goes through anarea, the growth rings of thatparticular tree may be scarred. Onlive trees this is called afire scar.Fire scars can also be seen ondead trees. Utilizingdendrochronology (study of growth rings), we can determinewhen fires have occurred in the past, and sometimes determine their intensity anddirection as well as other information about the weather patterns in that era.
4Fire regimeIt refers to the patterns of fire that occur over long periods of time and theimmediate effects of fire on the ecosystem in which it occurs. It is the function offrequency of fire occurrence, fire intensity and the amount of fuel consumed.
