1. The dendritic cells that are in the epithelia are professional antigen presenting cells.
These cells are also found in T cell rich areas in peripheral lymphoid organs, and almost
all organs, but they are in smaller number. These dendritic cells capture the microbes by
pinocytosis, and phagocytosis. Pinocytosis is used for antigens that are soluble, and
phagocytosis is used for antigens that are not soluble. These dendritic cells can also have
receptors that let them bind with microbes. When these cells sense or come across
microbes they produce cytokines. These cytokines make the dendritic cells lose
adhesiveness and help them leave the epithelium. Dendritic cells also have receptors for
chemokines. The chemokines direct the dendritic cells that are no longer in epithelium to
the lymph nodes that will drain. These dendritic cells then mature into antigen presenting
cells that can stimulate T lymphocytes. One main difference between immature and
mature dendritic cells is that mature dendritic cells can stimulate T lymphocytes and
