Physics 424: Quantum Mechanics, Fall 2015 Reading/Homework Assignment 9 Due in Class Friday, 11/20/15 1 Course announcements • There will be no class Wednesday 11/25 (the day before Thanks- giving). We can do this because we are having two evening exams. • Midterm Exam 2 will be 7-9pm Tuesday 12/1/15 in Hasbrouck 134. There will be an optional review session starting 7pm Monday 11/30/15 in Hasbrouck 138. Reading • Finish reading Townsend Ch. 6, Wave Mechanics in One Dimension: – Secs. 6.9 (Particle in a box) and 6.11 (Summary) are important to read. – Sec. 6.10 (Scattering in one dimension) is optional and will not appear on homework or tests, but you may find it interesting. • Readings in Townsend Ch. 7, The One-Dimensional Harmonic Oscilla- tor: – We will cover Sec. 7.10 (Inversion symmetry and the parity oper- ator) first, so you may want to read it first. – The key material we will cover in lecture, homework, and exams is Secs. 7.1 (Importance of the HO), 7.2 (Operator methods), 7.4 (Position-space wave functions), 7.6 (The large- n limit), 7.10, and 7.11 (Summary). – Every student of quantum mechanics should work through the recursion-relation solution to the HO TISE , so I would like you to read Sec. 7.9 (Solving the SE in position space) carefully, but it is not in the homework or exams. 1 2015-11-11 P424 HW9.tex c 2015 Donald Candela 1
• We will be skipping over Townsend Ch. 8 (Path Integrals). While you don’t need it for this homework, we will start covering Ch. 9 (Wave mechanics in three dimensions) later this week.
