1 Computer-Apple Powerbook Your personal laptop can be used for a wide variety of functions, including general communications (email, etc), the creation of text documents, MIDI and Audio sequences, music collections and video production. When mixing and rendering music projects (e.g. Reason and GarageBand), the resulting digital stereo audio files are commonly encoded at CD quality digital audio (44.1kHz, 16 bit), which takes up approximately 10 megs of space for one minute of audio. It therefore requires a large amount of storage space to save this format. It’s common to convert audio files to an AAC or MP3 format, which are much smaller, and therefore require less disk space. Note, as your music productions become more complex (and involve a lot of audio recording), additional storage is available through the connection of external firewire hard drives. Note, to review the specific hardware and software components of your personal laptop, use the system’s built-in “About This Mac” feature. Computer Questions 1. 2 MIDI MIDI, developed in 1983, stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. MIDI is a protocol (a standard set of rules) that defines a digital hardware and software specification. It is transmitted electronically in a serial fashion (one bit after another on a single wire), at a rate of 31,250 bits per second, from one digital device to another. • MIDI messages are made up of 8-bit words. • The MIDI specification defines 16 independent MIDI channels. • 256 decimal values can be expressed using 8 bits (status bytes) • 128 decimal values can be expressed using 7 bits (data bytes). • In a MIDI note on message, the velocity determines the volume of the synthesized sound. There are 128 possible velocity values (0-127). An example of a MIDI Note-ON channel message.
