Philosophy 91 Prof. Nancy Bauer Philosophy and Film <[email protected]> Fall 2007   (H) 617-965- 4373 (O) x72343 Miner 1 (basement) Office hours: M & W 3-4 Study Questions: Gaslight 1. Gaslight  focuses centrally on the torture of a woman.  But it’s not the only film we have seen thus  far that has portrayed women being poorly treated.  (Think about Delilah in  Unforgiven ; Marla in  Fight Club ;  Christa-Maria in  The Lives of Others , and Judy (and Madeleine?) in  Vertigo .)  One  might wonder whether these films  participate  in misogyny rather than just portray or indict it.  How  do we decide such questions?  Mulvey has one answer: all mainstream narrative films turn on the  violation of at least one woman via scopophilia, sadism, voyeurism, and/or fetishism.  Another  answer might be that we ought to judge each individual film as an individual film.  In particular, we  might decide to judge in each case whether the depiction of violence, psychological or physical,  against a woman invariably constitutes a kind of misogyny.   But there are complicated issues here.
