Tyler Piecara Rough Draft 4/20/2008 Professor Downs “I cannot think of any need in childhood as strong as the need for a father’s protection” The love of the father is more than just a need for the child. We feel the need of protection throughout our lives whether it be from our father, brother, husband, or son. Both Joseph and Sarty felt the need of protection from their respective fathers and went to the end of their worlds to get it. With this protection and love that they desired each went on to do things that they would not have normally been able to do. One fed a country for years, the other just saved his landlords barn. When compared they seem like yin and yang, but separate they are two great feats. The love of one’s father drives ordinary men to do extraordinary things. What drives people to do what they have to is not an exact science. Some do it for love, others because they must. In the case of Joseph he acted out of love for more than one of his fathers. He first did all that he could to please Jacob his birth father. Joseph worked to the best of his ability and was rewarded for it, although he made his
