Jan. 29, 2008 Depressive Disorder Lifetime Prevalence -10-25% of female -5-12% of male -15-37% of all people in the US What happens once you have it -18%-25% of youth who have one episode, have a 2 nd within one year -70% of youth relapse within 5 years -#1 predictor for adults to have bipolar disorder depressive episode during childhood -40% of kids with depression go on to develop bipolar disorder later on -up to 15% die by suicide -2/3 of episodes end completely -1/3 of episodes end partially (ruffin?) Major Depressive Episode (MDD) Diagnosis (DSM) 5 of 9 symptoms (must include at least one of the first two) Most of the day for most days Duration of at least 2 weeks Not a mixed episode Symptoms not due to bereavement Symptoms not due to medical condition or drugs  Symptoms are causing significant impairment  *depressed or irritable mood *anhedonia or lack of interest/pleasure…. .in adults don’t enjoy sex…. . symptom of depression -significant weight loss of lack of appetite in kids not gaining weight like normal -insomnia or hypersomnia for kids, reg. sleep will solve a lot of problems….sleep problems common w/
