Psychology 1305 Exam IV Review Chapter 11 – Personality Locus of control – the source of a person perceives to be exerting control over life’s events o People with a more internal locus of control – internals – are more likely to see control over events as coming from within; they feel personally responsible for what happens to them o People with an external locus of control – externals – are more likely to see control as coming from outside forces; they believe what happens to them is not their fault When in a failing situation, men tend to be externals while women tend to be internals Projective tests – presents the respondent with an ambiguous stimulus, and asks the respondent to make sense of the stimuli o Rorschach (inkblot) tests – the ambiguous shapes of the inkblots allow people to use their imaginations as they decide what the shapes might represent or resemble and what features of the inkblot made them think so A comprehensive and systematic scoring method was developed, but some still question its reliability and validity o Thematic Appreciation Test (TAT) – uses detailed black and white drawings and asks the respondent to create a storyline surrounding the drawing Only 3% of clinicians use the systematic scoring system, preferring to rely on their own instincts and interpretations. Also, from the person’s response to the cards, one cannot distinguish how the person acts and feels from how they wish to act and feel OCEAN – many factor analytic studies have revealed that personality traits can be reduced to five superfactors, called the Big Five ,trait theory; each superfactor is on a
