Civil Disobediencevs. Inherit the Wind Thoreau’s Civil Disobedienceis repellent to society in Inherit the Windbecause it goes against everything that they stand for and what they have already established. In Thoreau’s essay he stands against a form of conformity where people’s own beliefs and consciousness are restricted by laws. Thoreau’s believes in a limited government and that a person should be able to exercise individual thought. Society in Inherit the Windfunctions with the belief that religion is everything and is to be done with obedience and respect. They forbid academic freedom and individual though because they consider it to be threatening. This is shown in particular to the character, Bert Cates, a school teacher in Tennessee, who is put on trial for breaking the law and teaching his students evolution instead of what is in the bible.
