SBUS 199 – March 1, 2007 SBJ – ESPN and MLL Deal   ESPN is close to a deal that will give the network an equity stake  in Major League Lacrosse The deal furthers ESPN strategy of moving away from straight  sports rights for small properties, in favor of deals that allow the  company to own part of the league Deal similar to that of recent agreement with the AFL ESPN can offer assets to help grow these smaller leagues Other stakes include the PBA and the Skins golf event EPSN wholly owns the X Games, Bassmaster Classic and Jimmy  V Classic “Sports that are a little bit underserved or can benefit from being  showcased through all of our media, those are the properties that  we look to identify”

SBUS 199 – March 1, 2007 SBJ – XM-Sirius Proposed Merger   The proposed merger of satellite radio companies XM and Sirius  could cost the sports leagues millions of dollars in lost rights fees  and advertising revenue The change will come when current deals expire and leagues  have to negotiate new contracts without a bidding war between  rivals Will ad revenue that historically went to large traditional radio  programmers, such as ESPN, go to the new reach of a combined  13.6 million subscribers?
