Draw the Design Response Spectrum using either the spectrum from USGS or using the equations of Section 11.4.5. Solution: Either method 1 or method 2 can be followed. Method-1: From USGS website: 1. Go to 2. Select appropriate parameters: Design Code Reference Document- ASCE7-10 Site Class-C Risk Category-II (Office building) 3. Select location from the map- Campbell hall 4. Press Compute values A page showing S DS =1.643g and S D1 =0.887g values and Design Response Spectrum will turn up. (fig2) Method 2: According to ASCE 7-10 equations: 1. From fig 22.1 and fig 22.2 of ASCE 7-10, Ss= 2.466g and S 1= 1.025g for site class B (also available in USGS maps) 2. According to section 11.4.3: S MS= F a S S =2.466g S M1 =F v S 1 =1.33g Where, Fa=1.0 (table 11.4.1) And Fv= 1.3(table 11.4.2) for site class C 3. S DS =2/3 S MS =1.644g S D1 = 2/3 S M1 = 0.887g 4. Draw response spectrum according to section 11.4.5: To=0.2*S D1/ S Ds = 0.1s Sa at T=0, 0.4*S DS = 0.4*1.644= 0.66g
