BIOLOGY 1001 TEST 3 Chapter 10 1. Sexual reproduction requires fertilization . 2. An animal cell having two rather than one of each type of chromosome has a diploid chromosome number. 3. Generally, a pair of homologous chromosomes carries the same genes, has the same length and shape, and interacts at meiosis. 4. Meiosis reduces the parental chromosome number. 5. Meiosis is a division mechanism that produces four nuclei . 6. Before the onset of meiosis, all chromosomes are duplicated. 7. Duplicated chromosomes move away from their homologue and end up at the opposite spindle pole during anaphase I. 8. Sister chromatids of each duplicated chromosome move apart and end up at opposite spindle poles during anaphase I . Matching Chromosome number – sum total of chromosomes in all cells of a given type. Alleles – different molecular forms of the same gene. Metaphase I – pairs of homologous chromosomes are now aligned at the spindle equator. Interphase – none between meiosis I and II.
