Biology 100 Case Studies (07/08) Case Study 2 – Smart Drugs? Are there drugs that make you smarter? Do they work for everyone? Could you just pop a pill before the upcoming midterm and as a consequence, score a higher grade with the same amount of studying? Would such an enhancer be ethical? These are some of the questions we want you to have floating around in your brain while you work on Case Study 2 with your group. Don’t be distracted by foods. Most foods and vitamins that are cognitive enhancers are only helpful to fix a brain malfunction that is based on MALnutrution. Drugs that purport to enhance cognition are collectively referred to as nootropic drugs. To prepare for this case study, visit the following sites: 1) http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/smartd.html Neuroscience for Kids Website. We do not intend ANY insult by sending you to a “for kids” web site as this one has been brought to you by a very smart anesthesiologist from right here on campus. The site has been very handy for biology 100 students in past quarters. 2) http://www.erowid.org/smarts/ Erowid. We’ve chatted about Erowid since day 1 this quarter. A terrific resource, well referenced, and digestable. But keep in mind, the mission here is not exactly drug-promotion, but close. 3)
