Neil Mahoney Discussion Section # 14739 Lecture Assignment #4 1. How would you characterize Gore’s organizational structure using terms from this chapter? How might this structure influence Gore’s strategy? Gore’s organization follows an organic structure. The organization is low in formalization and authority structure, and has virtually no unity of command. The company thrives through employee involvement and team cohesiveness. Instead of the standard hierarchy structure, the organization has cross-functional teams with a comprehensive information and skills database; which empowers employees to think on their own and make decisions without requiring layers of approval. Through this cross functionality, employees are not restricted to a job description but are expected to excel through experience and innovation. The lack of power structure creates an environment where employees are free to express their true feelings without fearing discouragement from upper management. They are also expected to contribute equally to the team. This organic structure is used to increase innovation and creativity in the informal workplace. Sans rigid authority structure, the use of employee participation and teamwork for the company’s operations
