Review Sheet for Exam 3 Chapter 6 (Starting with the section on quantum mechanics and atomic orbitals) Definitions you should know: Wave function, probability density, electron density, orbital, electron shell, subshell, node, quantum numbers ( n , l , m l , m s ), Pauli exclusion principle, Hund’s rule, valence electrons, core electrons, representative (main group) elements, transition elements, lanthanide elements, actinide elements Skills you should know: Sketch/Recognize shapes and directions of s, p and d orbitals Write electronic configurations (expanded and condensed) of atoms and ions. The mnemonic aid given in the lecture can be used to predict the order of filling of orbitals. However, as the assigned exercise in Chapter 7 (problem 7.43) demonstrates, the highest quantum number electrons ionize first: V 3+ : [Ar]3d 2 Ni 2+ : [Ar]3d 8 Hg 2+ : [Xe]4f 14 5d 10 Be able to construct an energy-level diagram (Fig. 6.24, p. 238) and show electron spins following Hund’s rule Chapter 7
