Our Expanding Youth On a sunny Sunday afternoon, a warm breeze, birds chirping, and the streets filled with the laughter of the neighborhood children’s play sets the scene. However, as kids spend more time in front of television, computer and video screens, their physical activity levels decrease and their body weights increase. Obesity in kids is now epidemic in the United States. “The number of children who are overweight has doubled in the last two to three decades; currently one child in five is overweight. The increase is in both children and adolescents, and in all age, race and gender groups.” (Togan) The number of overweight children in our country today is multiplying and it’s sad. Without proper nutrition and guidance today’s overweight youth will be tomorrow’s obese adults. Parents and Teachers of America’s children should be aware of the causes of child obesity and ways to prevent it. Thus, there are many causes of obesity. There is no doubt that genetics play a role but major cause is overeating unhealthy food and lack of exercise. Children whose
