Chapter 17 Stage Costumes The Theater Experience Chapter 17 – Stage Costumes The Nature of Design The visual and aural elements of design provide an audience with an understanding of time, place, mood, etc. Scene Designer Scene Designer – responsible for the stage set Costume Designer Costume Designer – responsible for the outfits and accessories worn by the performers Lighting Designer Lighting Designer – responsible for the light / illumination of the stage space Sound Designer Sound Designer – responsible for the aural world of the play and the sound system Designers make connections between symbols and ideas, creating the world of the play in which the performers interact. They deal with the practical and aesthetic concerns of the stage production.

Chapter 17 Stage Costumes The Theater Experience Connections to Everyday Life Clothing is not limited to ‘costumes’ Clothing is not limited to ‘costumes’ The manner in which a person dresses can indicate multiple things: Sex Occupation Relative flamboyance or modesty Degree of independence or regimentation Whether one is dressed for work or leisure / for a routine event or a special occasion. Costumes and/or clothing holds symbolic importance – telling an audience much about a character before the performer even speaks.
