Skeletal age o A measure of ossification how much of the child’s skeleton (mainly cartilage at birth) has changed into bone o A baby’s skeletal system is mainly cartilage, which accounts to their flexibility, and as the child ages it turns into bone. o X-rays are taken to measure the age, cartilage does not show on x-rays, where as adult hands are almost all bone. o Boys are 4 weeks behind girl’s skeletal age at birth, this difference increases to 2 years when adolescence starts o Girls talk, control bowels and bladder, write and use cutlery earlier in their fine motor skills o Boys are better at gross motor skills like running, jumping, and throwing Health in World’s Children o Under age of 5, 1:3 children die in the world o The #1 cause is diarrhea resulting in dehydration o Treatable with oral rehydration therapy and the cost is low o Other causes of death o Measles, tetanus, whooping cough, which are easily immunized o Also other illness like Acute Respiratory Infections (pneumonia) which are life threatening Antibiotics can be used but parents don’t recognize the danger o Physical and psychological growth impacts preschool social development Cognitive Development
