New Arena Controversy Brandon C. Carson Topic: The New Arena Controversy General Purpose: To provide new information Specific Purpose: To inform listeners of the complex issues regarding the construction of the new Penguins arena so they can be aware of all of the issues before deciding which side they want to agree with. Thesis: Far more issues are present regarding the new Penguins arena than many of us think. INTRODUCTION I. Grab the audience’s attention. A. Story of what happened when the Penguins first came to Pittsburgh and the construction of what now is Mellon Arena. B. How would you feel if you woke up one day and saw that the town started construction on a new structure, say a Walmart or a mall, right in the heart of the town without your consideration or approval? These are the same feelings that the residents of the Hill District felt when they saw this construction happening. C. The resident’s reaction to the entire bringing the Penguins to Pittsburgh without asking them what their opinions were. II. What I plan to present in the speech.
