Esperanza Rising, written by Pam Mun os Ryan, is a book full of issues of power, class, race, gender, and voice. Its several messages are communicated to the reader both explicitly and implicitly. The story takes place in California just as the great depression is beginning. It is a wonderful coming of age tale for the book’s main protagonist, Esperanza Ortega. Esperanza is the daughter of Sixto Ortega, the wealthy land owner of El Rancho de las Rosas. Living a life of prosperity, she sits on “one side of the river” while her servants and father’s peasants, including her friend Miguel, sit on the other.
