Hoops and Hopes Basketball plays a significant role in the novel, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part- Time Indian, by Sherman Alexie. Basketball enhanced Junior's friendship with Roger and Penelope, and it saved his friendship with Rowdy. Without basketball, Junior would not have had his realization about the people on the rez that helped him to overcome his anger. When Junior first transferred to Reardan, he accepted that he was not going to have any friends because he was Indian, however his fate changed because he joined the basketball team. He had learned one of Penelope's darkest secrets and his knowledge helped them to become friends. Junior became popular by association and Roger invited him to a get pancakes after the dance. Roger talked to Junior for one of the first times when he asked, "Hey, man, are you going to try out for basketball?" This was at the beginning of their friendship that grew because they played basketball together. Also, basketball improved Junior and Penelope's "semi-dating" relationship.
