Ellyn Velasco Dr. Williams Humanities 120 February 13, 2007 Inferno: The Movie As the lights in the movie theater dim into darkness, the once black screen now displays the words Inferno: The Movie . The music peals in—a powerful symphony heavy with beats that sound like a soldiers’ march into war. The opening credits fade in and out with the names Ewan McGregor, Patrick Stewart, Angelina Jolie, and Jake Gyllenhall presented on the screen. A movie that would be made based on Dante’s Inferno could only be one made of epic proportions. Many of the religious influences, characters, and images present in Inferno would have to be modified because several powers such as the Catholic Church and oligarchy in Italy are not present today to serve as universal historical context to the audience. In Inferno: The Movie , Ewan McGregor would serve as an excellent Dante because he can convey an intellectual and at first apprehensive, but later bold character successfully on-screen.
