This is a question that ringers into our minds any time we hearand come across organizations; when it comes to society, home organizations, religion, as well as in ourpolitical arenas. A leader can be that person who has followers, that person who can see how things canbe improved and who rallies people to move toward that better vision. Leaders can work toward makingtheir vision a reality while putting people first. In the workplace, there are dozens of factors that can affect a leader’s effectiveness. These include thingslike the size of the team, the scope of a project and the expected delivery date for a result. Differentleaders, each with unique leadership styles, will respond to these variables in different ways. Contingencytheorists would say that no matter how successful a leader is, there will always be a particular situationthat will challenge them. Therefore, leaders must be willing to acknowledge the fact that their successdepends partially on their circumstances in addition to their personal skills.Contingency approach to leadership is defined by (Northouse, 2010) as the theory that deals withfinding the best match between a leader and a situation. Within the contingency approach, leadership styles can either be task motivated which prioritize on goal achievement orrelationship motivated which prioritizes on building better relationships. Contingency approachtests the adaptability of a leader which is a vital trait to possess. A leader can be effective in onesituation and not in another.Situational Leadership Model
Situational Leadership Theory focuses on leadership style and the maturity of those being ledwhere the leadership techniques used adapt to fit the maturity level of the group in question, on asituational basis. It states that the most effective style of leadership changes from circumstanceto circumstance and this is unavoidable. This theory is also referred to as the Hersey-BlanchardSituational Leadership Theory. It was developed by Dr. Paul Hersey and Kenneth Blanchard.
