Dana Killam 4/2/08 Term Paper (Final Draft) Engl. 115-20 The Mind of a Murderer The story “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allen Poe is a classic tale of premeditated murder. The main character Montresor seeks revenge against Fortunato for insulting Montresor many times. Montresor finally gets fed up with the insults and decides to take Fortunato’s life by deceiving him. Montresor knows that he needs to get revenge on Fortunato without getting in trouble himself. He does this by leading Fortunato down into his catacombs where Montresor ends up building a wall to trap Fortunato to where he will die. The use of setting, Fortunato’s weakness, and symbolism lets the reader see the inner mechanics in a murder’s mind. The setting in the story is one of the most important characteristics that make the death of Fortunato successful. The setting in the beginning of the story is near dusk at the carnival season. Montresor and Fortunato meet in the streets and Fortunato is dressed up in his jester costume. When they first meet Montresor is being very kind to Fortunato despite the hatred Montresor has against Fortunato. “Neither by word nor deed had I given Fortunato cause to doubt my good will. Montresor asks if Fortunato could give his opinion on the quality of the Amontillado that he purchased. The setting starts to change from outside in the streets to Montresor’s dark catacombs. From the beginning to the end of the story the setting keeps

As they move into the catacombs Montresor notices that Fortunato has a severe cold. Montresor says he will go to Luchresi for his opinion of the Amontillado. Luchresi is another friend of Montresor, and Montresor already knows that Fortunato knows more about wine than Luchresi does. Saying this to Fortunato was the bait, Fortunato knows that he can tell the difference between alcohol ways better than Luchresi. “My friend, no. It is not the engagement, but the severe cold with which I perceive you are afflicted. The vaults are
