Thar 201 July 25 th , 2016 Noh Theatre (sometimes called No Theatre) – “the art of walking” 14 th century traditional performance Minimalist movement Masked and unmasked characters o Masked – major characters, neutral face (gestures/body language to express emotion) Use of music and chorus Configuration of the stage is similar to the thrust stage in western theatre Picture: o Pine tree at the center of the stage represents the connection between human and spiritual world o Bridgeway located stage right: “hashigakan” Different from western o Structurally o Not narrative drama (western expects narrative drama) o Noh performers use appearance/movement to suggest essence of a tale rather than make things happen (total effect is not action; metaphor made visual) o Noh’s audience scholar, audience educated in story (able to appreciate subtlety of performance) Evolved out of early ritual Role of actors o Father -> passed on to son o NO WOMEN
