Fugitive slave act- Required authorities in the north to assist southern slave catchers and return runaway slaves to their owners. 7. Lincoln-Douglas Debates- Series of debates in the Illinois senatorial campaign where Lincoln and Douglas staked their differences on slavery. 8. New York draft riot- Irish-immigrant protest against conscription, escalated into class and racial warfare. Had to be stopped by federal troops. 9. Emancipation Proclamation- Decree announced by Lincoln freeing slaves in all confederate states still in rebellion. 10.
